1. Title of the Paper: Paediatric Health

Enhancing Paediatric Healthcare and Preventing blindness across all age-groups in Underprivileged Communities:

Combating Eye Cancer and Heart Ailments in Children (New-borns to 18 years old) and Preventing Avoidable Blindness across All Age-groups.

The NGO “Koshika Foundation” in New Delhi-India, in partnership with “Development Drishti” is seeking funds to accomplish its mission of total care in eye cancer and heart ailments in children of poor parents in India, and for preventing avoidable blindness across all age-groups.

2. Problem Statement: Parents of the weaker section of society with poor economic background particularly from rural locations give birth to under-nourished children born with such critical ailments as holes in hearts, malformed anatomy of the heart, that needs urgent attention. About half of the children born with congenital heart defects die for want of adequate medical care. Blind people – children and all age-groups, if untreated, become dependent and are deprived of a life of dignity. 30% of the world’s blind live in India. 1 in every 100 Indians is turning blind. Hence, a critical need to support surgeries for preventing avoidable blindness.Internationally, sight and life of 95% of the children suffering from eye cancer (retinoblastoma) are saved; in India, sight and life of only about 55% can be saved. Koshika’s support for timely diagnostics and treatment are aimed at saving more lives and sight of these children.

3. The Purpose Statement

It is intended to provide relief to millions of poor children in India, either born with Congenital Heart ailments or developing Eye cancer in growing years – saving sight and precious little lives. It will also serve all age-groups for prevention of avoidable blindness. Initial Funding required to cover 5,305 beneficiaries is approx. 207 lakhs. See Breakdown Below

4. Methodology:It is intended to use the existing platform of aforesaid NGO, Koshika Foundation, who are already collaborating with reputed hospitals across India and helping the poor children with several success stories that can be seen on their website. www.koshika.org. Development Drishti, will act as a bridge between the Donors and NGO Koshika to extend the financial support and make things happen at a much larger scale. It is intended to give push to the existing efforts put up by Koshika Foundation. Koshika are partnering with hospitals, through appropriate awareness campaigns and partnership with Health care providers.

5. Support Required: Key Points-of the support Required:

  1. Only Financial assistance (funding) required. It is intended to help out many children each year by supporting heart and eye surgeries and eye cancer treatment/rehab services across India. This support will be extended through partners who have charity profiles to keep costs low.
  2. Target beneficiaries are the poor masses of India in urban slum clusters and in remote areas. It is intended to cover in first phase, 5,305 beneficiaries who will benefit from this project and save their lives and sight from severe diseases threatening lives and well-being.
  3. Geographic Scope: The intended states to be covered are West Bengal, Jharkhand, UP, Bihar, Orissa, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and many others.
  4. Budget: Provide a detailed budget breakdown, including estimates for medical expenses, staff salaries, administrative costs, and any other relevant expenses. – attached
  5. Sustainability Plan: The project will be sustainable in the long run, beyond the funding period, with help of funds to be raised in the future by CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)and fund-raising campaigns.
  6. Partnerships: Koshika Foundation has several partnerships with local healthcare organizations, hospitals and other NGOs.
  7. Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitoring will be undertaken by independent SMEs and they will measure the impact of this project and ensure accountability with oversight from Development Drishti.
